Besides having numerous tourist attractions, Thailand is the best place to enjoy spa treatments which are extensive and affordable. Thailand has earned a reputation as an excellent location for spa services in Asia, and Bangkok is known as the “Spa Capital of Asia”. Many spa establishments here are renowned worldwide for their expertise and high-standard services, as well as the hospitality of their personnel.

Thailand’s wealth of health care expertise and knowhow is embodied in Thai culture and indigenous wisdom. Visitors from all over the world appreciate not only the excellent medical and health care but also enjoy the experience of Thai spas and traditional Thai massage. Major types of spas available in Thailand are day spas, destination spas, medical spas and hotel/resort spas.

If you plan to have an unforgettable spa experience in Thailand, you will absolutely come to the right place because our spas have gained popularity for bringing customers total relaxation in tandem with good health.

No trip to Thailand is completed until you have experienced a pampering Thai spa treatment. As Thailand has earned a reputation as the spa capital of Asia, we think it is interesting to learn some aspects of spas in Thailand.

Background

At the beginning, spas in Thailand were chiefly located in luxurious hotels. They were established around the mid-20th century to meet the needs of foreign visitors at that time. The services gained popularity very soon. That’s why new spas have sprung up like mushroom in cities and famous attractions. Many of them have developed with advanced techniques such as hydrotherapy and aromatherapy.

Since 2001, the concept of spas has been widely spread among the Thai urban populations because they have suffered from health problems caused by their rushing lifestyles and the polluted environment. And spa treatments have been found to be alternative ways to maintain their health balance.

Hotel/Resort Spa

Thailand is an ideal destination for spa holidays thanks to many five-star hotels and exclusive wellness spas you can find throughout the country. Our great selection of luxury spa hotels and resorts will surely offer you the best relaxing luxury holidays.

All these spa hotels and resorts provide modern facilities and a wide range of spa treatments and packages given by professional and experienced therapists.

Moreover, the spa resorts in the beachfront locations will allow you to easily combine a relaxing beach holiday with soothing spa treatments. Or you can opt for a modern spa resort in the mountainous north to enjoy unique experience surrounded by natural beauty.

Medical Spa

Medical spa is a day spa operating within or integrated with a medical establishment, such as a health centre or hospital, which combine treatments and programs designed and supervised by medical professionals using the latest spa treatments and techniques.

The medical spas provide typical spa menus such as various kinds of massage, herbal steam, body scrubs and hydrotherapy, to relax your body and mind, together with therapeutic programmes and the use of aesthetic technology under the supervision of physicians.

Examples of therapeutic and aesthetic treatments available in the medical spas are the regular health check-up, high blood pressure and diabetes controls, detoxification, and alternative medicine like yoga, Chinese acupuncture and reflexology, as well as slimming and nutrition management.

In addition, many medical spas offer clients a complete individual health plan. Considering the background of the client’s health problems, spa doctors can educate clients on health management - including healthy diet and exercise programs.

Bangkok now boasts several excellent medical spas with well-trained English speaking staff, clean comfortable facilities and optional consultations with a health specialist prior to treatment.

Thai Massage

Thai massage plays an important role in a spa therapy. People receive a Thai massage to sooth muscular aches and pains, ease sprains, relieve nervous tension and to stimulate blood circulation. Thai massage is sometimes conducted with the application of heated herbal compresses to improve its result.

Generally, traditional Thai massage is divided into royal Thai massage (Nuat Ratchasamnak) and folk massage (Nuat Chaloeisak). Royal Thai massage was formerly reserved for the King and the royalty. The masseuses must perform their task in a deferential manner and only hands are allowed to be used. Royal massage is a tender massage because masseuses apply less strength to ensure that they don’t hurt the patient. In comparison, folk massage is a vigorous one and it is used among the general public. Other parts of the body such as elbows, knees, legs, heels and feet can be used to give a more forceful massage.

While the traditional Thai massage doesn’t involve the use of oil, many modern spas have adapted it by using aromatherapy oils to increase the therapeutic benefits.

Apart from Thai massage, the magnetism of Thai spas is their deliberate styles that match the topography and culture of each region and a great choice of local herbs and other spa components that create a wide selection of Thai spa programmes.

Factors Supporting Thailand as Spa Capital of Asia

Spas of Thailand are second to none because of the distinctive traditional Thai massage and the outstanding Thai hospitality presented through the well-trained therapists. Most clients are impressed with their hospitable services and tender attention. The large variety of destinations, the competitive prices and the expert therapists who are service-oriented are among the advantages the country enjoys.

Another interesting feature of Thai spas is a good range of high-quality homemade products produced from natural and local ingredients. With the harmony of great selections of Thai herbs and their healing properties, Thai spa and beauty products cover from head to toe. They come in all kinds of applications - cleansing, scrubbing, wrapping, masking, massage oil, massage gel and cream, and hair care, to name but a few.

Moreover, the government has provided training to personnel in the spa industry to enhance the standards of Thai spas. The Thai Spa Association and the Thai Spa Operators Association were set up to bring together all those involved in the local spa industry to steer Thai spas in the same direction.

There are countless spa establishments in Bangkok. Many of them offer world class healthcare standard and services. Day spas and hotel/resort spas are also scattered throughout major tourist destinations like Chiang Mai, Hua Hin, Pattaya, Samui and Phuket. No matter where you are in Thailand, you can always find a good spa to unwind. Most spas offer a wide range of spa treatments and packages for your selection.

Let’s enjoy it! There is no better place to enjoy a spa experience than in Thailand!
