This wooded route northwest of Chiang Mai is dotted with tourist development sites -- resorts, orchid and butterfly farms, elephant camps, snake farms and antique and handicraft shops. Some interesting ones are:

Orchid & Butterfly Farms

There are quite a number of such farms along this route. Many orchid farms also have butterfly enclosures setting in natural environment.

 

Resorts

There are several scenic resorts by the hillsides or in the valleys where hundreds of species of exotic flowers and plants are grown and elaborately arranged. Most of them provide accommodations for nature lovers.

 

Mae Sa Waterfall

This 8-leap waterfall is 26 kilometres from town and occupies a natural setting among big towering trees.

Elephant Camps

Along Route 1096 and Route 107 (Mae Taeng - Chiang Dao) there are several elephant camps that provide shows of elephants at work and an opportunity to take an elephant-back ride.

Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden

(Km. 12 Route 1096)

Covering an area of 560 acres, it was established in 1992 in order to gather, to conserve and to strengthen the study and research on Thai plants and herbs. More than 700 species of plants, mostly Thai natives, are grown here. Visitors can drive around and drop in at the spots of their interest, e.g. the Orchid Breeding Center, the Herbs Center, and the Greenhouse.

They can also walk along any of the three fixed trails -- the Rock Garden, the Arboreta and the Climber Collection.

Mae Sa Meo Village

Chiang Mai Arboretum (Huai Kaeo)

This is the landscaped park containing many kinds of tropical trees and flowers. It also serves as a fitness park for local people.

Chiang Mai Zoo

Located on a 210-acre woody land at the foot of Doi Suthep, Chiang Mai Zoo is home to over 7,000 animals in a wooded natural environment. Due to its plentiful animals and beautiful natural setting, the zoo is one of the popular attractions in Chiang Mai. Since December 2003, it has become a must-visit place for both Thai and foreign visitors as it received Chuang Chuang and Lin Hui, a couple of pandas from Sichuan, China. Six years later in May 2009, the couple produced a cute baby panda named “Lin Ping” who is now a new star of the zoo. Chiang Mai Zoo also got four koalas from Australia in July 2006 to mark the 60th anniversary of His Majesty the King’s Accession to the Throne.

What else to see in Chiang Mai Zoo

  • Open Zoo - Meet Spotted deer, Hog deer, Barking deer, Brow Anther deer, Alpaca, Peacocks and 200 other animals in the area of 40 acres. You can walk through the Open Zoo on the sky walker for a close watch of the animals.
  • Nakornping Walk Through Aviary - Observe more than 800 birds of various species in a 2.5 acres area.
  • Fresh Water Aquarium - Here is a collection of both fresh water fishes and sea animals of more than 250 species in the world’s longest underwater tunnel.
  • A camping area near the big reservoir with an adventure station and natural trail – an ideal place for children.
  • Snow Dome – The latest attraction in the zoo, apart from being a new home for Panda’s family, this 580 sq m snow dome also features a separate area for visitors to enjoy.

Chiang Mai Night Safari

Chiang Mai Night Safari is the world’s largest night safari and one of the world’s most modern natural attractions. The park combines the beauty of nature with human imagination to create a unique experience that is sure to please all ages.

Night safari tram ride is the highlight of Chiang Mai Night Safari. The tram ride is available daily from 07.00 p.m. until 10.00 p.m. with every 15 minutes departure. Night safari tram ride will take 30 minutes in each north and south zone which the passengers have to get off at the south zone and get on again for the north zone.

South Zone: Wildlife include Serows, Gorals, Gaurs, Red Kangaroos, White Rhinos, Striped Hyenas, Cheetahs, Wildebeests, Giraffes, Wild Yaks and Barasinghas.
North Zone: Wildlife include Lions, Manned Wolves, Black Bears, Jackals, Pumas, Hyenas, Crocodiles, Vultures, Malayan Sun Bears and Wolves.

Besides the night safari zones, Chiang Mai Night Safari also features many other attractions, e.g. Digital Zoo, Tiger World displaying 40 tigers from 10 species including the white tigers, Walking Zone, Elephant Riding, etc.

Doi Suthep & Doi Pui National Park

(Route 1004, 16 km. northwest of Chiang Mai town)

Covering an area of 262 sq.km., this luxuriant park is home to more than 300 bird species and nearly 2,000 species of ferns and flowering plants. Some hiking trails in the park pass Hmong villages while others lead to a few small waterfalls where local people come for picnicking on weekends. Accommodations are available near the park headquarters. Here are interesting spots in the national park.

Khruba Siwichai Monument

It is situated at the foot of Doi Suthep Mountain, built to honour a most revered monk who led the local people to construct the road up to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep in 1935.

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep

Located on Mount Doi Suthep, only 15 km. from town and about 3,000 feet above sea level, this temple is an important landmark of Chiang Mai and regarded as a "must-visiting place" for all visitors to this province.

Its special feature is the 300-step naga stairway leading to the temple. The temple's golden pagoda contains holy Buddha relics.

The temple is open daily from 06.00 - 19.00 hours.

Bhubing Palace (Royal Winter Palace)

The palace stands further up the mountain 6 km. from Wat Phra That. Its landscaped gardens are decorated with plenty of colourful, exotic flowers.

It is open every day from 08.30 - 16.30 hours, except when the Royal family is in residence, usually from mid December to early February.

Doi Pui Tribal Village (Meo or Hmong Village)

It is located at Doi Pui about 4 km. from the Bhubing Palace. For those who don't have enough time to visit remote hilltribe villages, here is a good spot to see modern tribal life and buy Meo handicrafts.
